The Unhoneymooners – Christina Lauren

The perfect summer beach read! If you are getting ready to go on a trip or simply are in need of a great rom-com that will make you laugh more than you would ever expect, this is the book for you. The story begins with the unfortunate wedding catastrophe of Ami Torres as a food poisoning ruins what she envisioned to be the best night of her life. All her guests have been contaminated except her twin sister Olive and her brother-in-law Ethan who are known to have a very tense/hateful relationship. The newlyweds had planned a fairytale-like honeymoon in Hawaii that they would not have wasted for anything in the world and ultimately decide to convince Olive and Ethan to go and pretend that they are the expected guests.

From the hilarious scenes testing their acting abilities to Olive’s sudden encounter with her future boss, the trip turned out to be a complex and funny set of misunderstandings sprinkled by the birth of the least expected love story amidst the outspoken hatred of the characters. I did not expect this book to be a page-turner since the summary quite explicitly announced the plot, yet the unravelling of the story proved to be more interesting and entertaining than a cliché modern rom-com. It was also amazing to read about all the experiences Olive and Ethan had in Maui : snorkeling, zip-lining, climbing a mountain at 4 AM to watch the sunrise and so much more that was included in the honeymoon package.

As much as the novel is about Ethan and Olive’s initially forced proximity, it is also about Olive’s ability to learn to let go and enjoy the moment given her tendency to plan everything. It is very hard to write about The Unhoneymooners without spoiling the perfect pace, the humour and the unavoidable heart-warming romance and family moments. I hope you enjoyed my review and that it gave you a nice teaser on a great summer read!
